Aspidistra Elatior, also known as the Cast Iron Plant, has tough, leathery, deep green spear shaped leaves perfect for a shady corner. Make sure to wipe leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to keep them dust free and shiny.
The aspidistra is extremely resilient, can tolerate some neglect and is very low maintenance.
Occasionally produces reddish/cream flowers nestled at soil level.
Considered non-toxic and safe to keep around small children and animals.
Pot Size: 15cm
Light: Can thrive in a range of conditions – a bright spot out of direct sunlight or a shady corner.
Compost: Prefers well-draining soil. Keep soil just moist and evenly watered in summer and sparsely watered in winter. Avoid excess water around the roots as this can lead to root rot. Top dress with fresh compost each spring.
Feed: Every 1 – 2 months during the growing season to encourage fuller foliage.
Growth Rate: slow.
